On behalf of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, HE Mrs. Majd Shweikeh officiates over the 23rd graduating class at PSUT

Under the patronage of HRH Princess Sumaya Bint Al Hassan, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Princess Sumaya University for Technology, the 23rd wave of PSUT graduates enjoyed the graduation ceremony at Prince Hamzah Sports Hall in Al Hussein Youth City in the presence of a number of stakeholders in the education and technology sector.

HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan charged HE Mrs. Majd Shweikeh, Minister of Communications and Information Technology with officiating over the graduation ceremony on her behalf.  Mrs. Shweikeh conveyed Her Royal Highness's greetings to the graduating students and the attendees at the beginning of an address from HRH the Princess, saying  that the day was “a day of joy, pride and pleasure in the graduation of this current class from this University, which has become well-known for focusing on the quality of graduates and keeping pace with rapid changes, and it marks the beginning of a new stage and the key to the future on the path of community service, progress and prosperity. Her Highness reminded the graduates of the reputation and fame enjoyed by the University, and called upon them to live up to the expectations of its founders, headed by HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, and the institution which embraced the University, the Royal Scientific Society, which is the largest national institution for applied scientific research in Jordan, and to preserve its reputation. Her Highness reviewed the most outstanding achievements of the University, which have brought it renown both locally and internationally. The most prominent of these achievements were gaining the top position among Jordanian universities in the University Proficiency Exam and receiving accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) in the specializations of Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Communications Engineering. Also, in 2014 the University received the Order of Independence, First Class in recognition of the advanced standards that it has achieved within Jordan, its contribution to building the ICT sector and business in the Kingdom, its offering of unique specializations, its embrace of creativity and innovation, and its association with agreements and joint projects with prestigious national and international universities and institutions.

Her Royal Highness pointed out that the celebration is being held in the middle of this year, the Jordanian Year of Science, which is packed full of different activities and science events aimed at achieving sustainable development. Our cultural heritage of science and technology will be celebrated in the Jordan Museum in cooperation with the International Exhibition, the Jordanian version of “1001 Inventions” which documents the most important contributions of Arab Islamic civilization in the development of humanity. There will be a further exhibition entitled “Jordan: Land of Creativity, Continuity and Change”, which aims to document human creativity on the land of Jordan through the ages.

HRH the Princess added that the activities of the Jordanian Year of Science 2017 will culminate in the holding of the "World Science Forum, 2017" in November, which will be hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan under the royal patronage and organized by the Royal Scientific Society. The forum, which is held once every two years, is a science conference that will raise the name of Jordan and put the Kingdom on the map of world science. She also stated that Jordan, by the grace of God, was able to overcome the fierce competition from different countries in the region and the world to host this forum for 2017. The Forum's partners responded to the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah II, may God maintain his glory, to hold it in Jordan, believing and recognizing that Jordan is a country that cares about science and scientists, and appreciates peaceful dialogue and creative thinking.

The forum will witness the largest scientific event of its kind, with more than 3,000 scientists and thinkers from more than 100 countries participating under the theme "Science for Peace”.

HRH Princess Sumaya encouraged the graduates to pursue the path of excellence and service, and to make their best efforts to employ the knowledge and skills gained through their studies to serve national priorities. She congratulated them on their graduation and urged them to be the best ambassadors for their University on both the national and international scenes.

The President of the University, Professor Mashoor Al-Refai, welcomed the audience and said that “we are today celebrating the graduation of the 23rd wave of students from Princess Sumaya University for Technology; this University, in which the illuminating beacons of knowledge have lit brightly the path of leadership, where the pulpits of science have scaled the heights of excellence, until it has become a beacon to guide all those who advocate leadership and distinction. PSUT’s labors have come to fruition, giving realization to its vision, and the University glorifies this evening in presenting this array of outstanding graduates to our great and generous homeland. The PSUT family takes great pleasure and pride in offering its dear graduates the most sincere congratulations on this accomplishment. Therefore, we congratulate you and your families who have borne patiently and sacrificed for you; we also congratulate the nation on receiving you, a nation which awaits from you even more effort and giving. We have complete faith that you will be pioneers and leaders, making your contribution to the progress and prosperity of Jordanian society.

Prof. Al-Refai also pointed out that the University, from its inception, set out on the path of leadership and creativity, and has come a long way along this path. Along the way, it has achieved many outstanding accomplishments which have distinguished it and brought it to the forefront among Jordanian universities, and a given it a prestigious status among universities worldwide. These many outstanding achievements include:

1. Four PSUT students from a total of 12 Jordanian students have been chosen to undertake training at the Ames Laboratory, which is affiliated to the US Space Agency, NASA. The student were selected as part of an initiative of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II which aims at lending support to students and researchers, and giving them the opportunity to display their talents and develop their sense of creativity.

2. PSUT maintained the lead among Jordanian universities in the 2016/2017 University Proficiency Exam, which was set by the Higher Education Accreditation Committee. The University took first place among the public and private universities in the general level and ranked first at the exact level in 75% of the University’s offered programs.

Prof. Al-Refai noted that the University’s extensive accomplishments, its high status at the pinnacle of excellence among Jordanian universities, and its world-class reputation could only have been attained  under prudent guidance, the guidance of someone who firmly believes that leadership and creativity lead to excellence, and that excellence leads to the summit. Indeed, that guidance comes from Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University, who has overcome all obstacles to achieve her visions and carried high the banner of leadership and excellence in this University. Thus, from all of us, we offer our sincere thanks and gratitude to Her Highness Princess Sumaya.

Prof. Al-Refai addressed the graduates, saying, "As you leave your University after graduation, know that your University is proud of you and considers that you carry the hopes and aspirations for the building of tomorrow's future. In your hands, and those of graduates like you, lies the prosperity of our society. The University will continue to keep in touch with you and we hold the sincere wish that you will continue to uphold its reputation and remain loyal to the University, to the nation, and to the leader of our nation, who has paid the utmost attention to the young generation, actively promoted the improvement of Jordanian universities, and pushed them in their quest to move forward.

After the degree certificates were presented to the graduates, honors were given to those students who performed outstandingly in the University Proficiency Exam for 2016/2017. Twenty PSUT students took top places in the examination, competing against the remaining Jordanian universities. Also honored was Dr. Mahmoud Oweida for his faithful work throughout his years of working at the University.

In conclusion, Prof. Al-Refai thanked HE Mrs. Majd Shweikeh, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, who presided over the ceremony on behalf of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, and all the attendees for their participation. He also thanked the vice presidents, deans, directors and members of the teaching and administrative bodies for their tremendous efforts throughout this academic year. He also extended his thanks and appreciation to Dr. Mahmoud Oweida, who served as the Administrative Director of the University, for his faithful service which spanned the quarter century since the University was founded. He said that Dr. Mahmoud’s efforts had contributed greatly to reaching the prestigious position now held by the University, and he wished him a long life and a happy life in retirement. He also congratulated the graduates and their families, wishing them a bright future, full of service and outstanding performance, under the leader of the nation and patron of the journey, His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein, may Allah guide him on the path of righteousness.

Student Umar Hashim Al-Kafaween was the valedictorian and thanked HRH Princess Sumaya bint El-Hassan, the University's administration and professors for all the academic and moral support that had given during the graduates’ years of study.
