The Council of Higher Education reached a decision, via a videoconference session, to approve the "Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity" program at Princess Sumaya University for Technology. The Department of Computer Science at the King Hussein School of Computing Sciences will begin teaching the program at the start of the 2020/2021 academic year.
The qualitative program, at the level of Jordan and the region, aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to analyze cybersecurity problems, design appropriate solutions to them, enhance innovation capacity, while adhering to professional, legal and ethical frameworks, and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
The President of PSUT, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, confirmed that the launch of the specialization aims to meet the world’s current needs, especially with the shift in the concept of digital economy, the information society, e-government services, and the issuance of electronic signature laws.
Al-Refai indicated the University’s desire to continue its leading role in the field of specialized technology education, and to prepare members of a qualified and professional workforce in response to the demands of the Jordanian and regional market, in order to realize the aspirations of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, the Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, to raise the University to a prominent status.
The Acting Dean of the School, Dr. Ashraf Ahmed, explained that the study plan for the new specialization was designed after an in-depth study of the needs of the global, regional and local labor markets, and after seeking the opinions of private sector institutions and faculty with academic and practical experience.
The Dean pointed out that the School started developing a cybersecurity training program in cooperation with the University of Arizona – Tucson in the USA, making it the first training program in its field in Jordan and the region. The program draws upon local and international expertise, and participating students receive a joint certificate from the two universities, according to three different levels: The first certificate covers the cybersecurity of computer networks in the first three months, while the second level covers computer security in the second three months, while the third level covers the security of cellular devices and cloud computing.
The School has specialized laboratories, the first in the region, such as a data science laboratory equipped with the latest technologies from hardware and software used in data science and artificial intelligence. There is also a cybersecurity and digital investigations laboratory; it enables the student to use virtual servers to practice, install and configure operating systems and services, piracy operations, and perform the analysis of digital investigations.
Cybersecurity is the range of technical, organizational and administrative means which are taken to prevent the unauthorized use, misuse and recovery of online information, and the communication and information systems that are involved, with the aim of ensuring the availability and continuity of work of information systems, and strengthening the protection, confidentiality and privacy of personal data.
