The defense of a Master's thesis, presented by the researcher Hanin Damer, took place at Princess Sumaya University for Technology’s King Talal School of Business Technology, under the title: "Smart Specialization in Developing Economies: Adapted application toward innovation-led / knowledge-based economic development: Case of Petra Region".
The defense committee consisted of Dr. Nadia Sweis as supervisor, Prof. Bakr Al-Sarhan, Dean of the School Dr. George Sammour, Dr. Adiy Tweissi as internal examiners, and Prof. Bjørn T. Asheim, professor of economic geography and innovation theory at the Business School / Centre of Innovation Research, University of Stavanger, Norway, as an external examiner.
The thesis, the defense of which was attended by the Environment Director for Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, Eng. Majed Al-Hasanat, aims to explore lateral and innovative approaches to economic development in the Petra region, as a developing knowledge-based economy led by innovation.
Dr. Sammour praised the researcher’s efforts and perseverance, and the importance of her study’s outcomes in bringing about real development. He emphasized that the School believes in knowledge, creativity and innovation as tools to change and improve reality, and works to direct its graduate students towards finding solutions to local community problems.
Hanin Damer said that her study adopted an innovative approach to respond to the challenges in the tourism industry, with the potential of building information technology, big data and informatics. She pointed out the development of the "Petra Dynamic and Cognitive Dashboard" program to provide lateral mechanisms for analysis, and enable public bodies to improve the decision-making process.
