The Chinese company Huawei, Jordan branch, honored two teams of students from Princess Sumaya University for Technology who recently won its two international competitions. The prizes were bestowed in the presence of Huawei’s General Director, Zhang Liang, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Mamoun Al-Dabai, the President of the University, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, the deans of the King Abdullah II School of Engineering and the King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, Dr. Belal H. Sababha and Dr. Ashraf Ahmad, and the students’ supervisors from the School.

The team that won first place in the Huawei Middle East Innovation Competition was presented with a prize of $20,000. The team comprised students Amr Emad Darawsheh, Elena Sami Abu Siam, and Leen Najeeb Abu Al-Shaar, under the supervision of Dr. Ammar Muhammad Odeh. The team that won first place globally in the ICT Skills Competition comprised students Zaid Mahmoud Afaneh, Muhammad Ali Abu Shukr, Mansour Qais Al-Hammoud, who trained under the supervision of Eng. Ashraf Suleiman Sabha.

Prof. Al-Dabai thanked Huawei for its great efforts and perseverance in giving its total support to the technology sector, and for establishing special academies in a number of Jordanian universities. He praised the PSUT students, describing their victory as a source of pride for all Jordanians, and adding that they are the best ambassadors for Jordanian universities.

Meanwhile, Zhang Liang congratulated the two PSUT teams, stating that knowledge and skills are the cornerstones of progress. He added that the company promotes ICT technologies with the aim of achieving equal access and progress in education.

Zhang Liang stressed Huawei's commitment to working with local partners in the field of education, building bridges to narrow the digital divide, and achieving equal educational opportunities. He expressed his hope that the company's ICT ecosystem will contribute to building the future of the younger generation in Jordan.

Prof. Al-Refai thanked the company for its pioneering role, and congratulated the winners for their efforts, stressing the high level of competitiveness among the University’s students at the international level, citing some of the awards they had won in the last two years.

Al-Refai added that PSUT, under the directives of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of its Board of Trustees, has in recent years paid greater attention to both cybersecurity, and data science, in order to keep pace with increasing global demands.

Huawei specializes in providing ICT infrastructure and smart devices, and is committed to working to deliver digitalization to individuals, homes and companies. Their aim is to build a fully interconnected smart world by offering integrated solutions within the fields of communication networks, IT, smart devices, and cloud computing services.

PSUT won first place in the world in the IEEEXtreme Programming Competition, in addition to second and third prizes from the initial session of the Crown Prince Award for Best Government Services Application. It also won two gold and bronze medals in the Arab Programming Competition for the Middle East and Africa, taking the title of champion of the MENA region in the ACM’s International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), 2018.

Furthermore, PSUT has established an academy specializing in the fields of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and cloud computing, in cooperation with Huawei International Corporation, Jordan branch.
