Prof. Dr. Wejdan Abu Elhaija, the President of at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT), patronized the closing ceremony of the AI Around Us training camp, organized by King Hussein School of Computing Sciences. The camp spanned two days and attracted the participation of approximately 1,000 male and female students from public and private schools at the governorate level, within the university campus.
Prof. Abu Elhaija expressed her delight at the beginning of the meeting, which was attended by the Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Bassam Hammo, the Dean of King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, Prof. Ashraf Ahmed, a number of faculty members, and the teachers who accompanied the students. Prof. Abu Elhaija expressed her satisfaction with the inception of this training camp on the university campus, noting the unwavering commitment of PSUT to placing students at the forefront.
Prof. Abu Elhaija emphasized that artificial intelligence is rapidly asserting its influence on the world. This field is dedicated to advancing smart systems and technology that enable devices and programs to learn and make decisions. She specifically mentioned the current generation of "school students," known in modern sociology as Generation Z, who were born at the beginning of the third millennium. This generation, which follows Generations X and Y, is fully immersed in the internet and possesses remarkable capabilities. Economists anticipate that Generation Z will lead the world in at least twenty years, shaping it in alignment with their aspirations, dreams, and needs.
Prof. Abu Elhaija confirmed that some people are concerned about the artificial intelligence and believe that it will replace numerous jobs in the future. However, the situation is not as bad as they perceive it to be. Artificial intelligence also introduces new opportunities and creates alternative and significant roles, which individuals themselves will assume. Humans are the ones who stand behind the success or failure of artificial intelligence tools, based on how they choose to utilize them. It is therefore crucial for all of us to utilize these tools in a positive manner and refrain from any misuse, as their misuse can have severe consequences for humanity as a whole.
Prof. Ashraf Ahmed, the Dean of King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, affirmed the school's commitment to fostering cooperation with local community institutions and sharing its knowledge and expertise. The objective is to empower the next generation in a cognitive and scientific manner, equipping them with technology that aligns with the swift pace of global advancements. Notably, the students and graduates of the university are actively engaged as genuine partners in these global technological advancements and techniques.
Prof. Ashraf Ahmed also mentioned that the school successfully organized a training camp comprising four sessions over two days. The sessions were conducted by highly skilled school professors who specialize in artificial intelligence, ChatGPT, DALL-E, and robotics, including the Pepper robot which was programmed by the university students. The primary objective was to equip schools across Jordan with scientific knowledge, nurturing students' skills and fostering their growth and development in subsequent stages.
The representatives of the participating schools also acknowledged and valued this initiative, recognizing its role in helping school administrations prepare students to embrace the technological advancements of this era. The initiative aims to equip students with the necessary skills to positively engage with these developments
At the end of the closing ceremony of the training camp, Prof. Abu Elhaija, the President of the University, awarded certificates of appreciation to the students who participated in the program. Furthermore, Prof. Abu Elhaija acknowledged and honored the organizers of the training camp.
