Princess Sumaya University for Technology held a workshop on the DigiSkills Microelectronics program, focusing on semiconductors and microelectronics manufacturing. The workshop is part of a major initiative by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, through the Youth, Technology, and Jobs Project, managed by the DigiSkills Association and funded by the World Bank. The goal is to enhance the professional skills of fifth-year students and recent graduates in these fields to boost their employment opportunities.
The workshop was attended by Dr. Osama Abu Sharkh, Dean of the King Abdullah II School of Engineering, along with several professors, students, and university staff involved in the training program, including Prof. Fadi Shahrouri, Director of the Consultation and Training Center, Dr. Ammar Odeh, Ola Sayaydeh, and Yousef Thoqan, as well as various partners and specialists.
Prof. Fadi Shahrouri announced that the DigiSkills Association, affiliated with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, in partnership with Princess Sumaya University for Technology, is offering a training grant to 100 students from the school in collaboration with the Synopsys company. This grant includes a six-month integrated training program on the university campus, covering English communication skills development, specialized sessions on semiconductors and microelectronics, and practical training.
Dr. Fadi Obeidat, Engineering Manager at Synopsys for the EMEA region, stressed the importance of enhancing universities' roles in Jordan to attract investment in electronic chips manufacturing through industrial cooperation. High unemployment rates among engineering graduates, driven by a lack of industrial opportunities, push many to pursue careers in software despite global demand for engineers. To retain local talent and prevent job-seeking abroad, creating an appealing environment for global companies to invest in Jordan is essential, making this program a crucial step forward.
During the workshop, Dr. Osama Abu Sharkh, Dean of the King Abdullah II School of Engineering, honored students participating in the training course for the JoSDC competition in semiconductor design, which was held on the university campus over two weeks. The course was organized by Fifth Company in partnership with the Crown Prince Foundation, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, the Information and Communications Technology Association (int@j), and supported by Al Hussein Fund for Excellence.
