Reaffirming the Message of “Science for Peace”: HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan Meets COMSATS Delegation during Visit to Princess Sumaya University for Technology

In line with the message of “Science for Peace,” Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT), received a delegation from the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), led by H.E. Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Nafees Zakaria, Executive Director of COMSATS, during a three-day visit to PSUT.

The meeting was attended by PSUT President Prof. Wejdan Abu Elhaija, Dr. Zakaria, and Dr. Adel Samida representing ICESCO, along with officials from El Hassan Science City institutions, and a distinguished group of scientists and experts from the visiting delegation.

HRH Princess Sumaya emphasized the longstanding and close collaboration between Jordanian institutions and COMSATS, commending the shared belief that science and technology must serve sustainable development and the well-being of humanity.

“It has been inspiring to witness the rich exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experiences over the past few days,” Her Royal Highness said. “Science, when it transcends borders, becomes a universal language of peace, cooperation, and hope.”

She recalled the pioneering role of the Royal Scientific Society, noting that its Industrial Chemistry Center became, in 1997, one of the first Centers of Excellence affiliated with COMSATS — a national achievement that reflects Jordan's deep commitment to leveraging science for development.

HRH added that this cooperation has continued through workshops, scientific exchanges, and meetings, reflecting shared values of innovation and sustainability.

Princess Sumaya highlighted that the RSS, founded by the late King Hussein bin Talal, and whose mission continues under the leadership of HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal, is grounded in the belief that "science must serve humanity, acting as a tool for healing, communication, and advancement." She stressed that PSUT is committed to this same path, preparing a new generation of scientists and engineers to harness emerging technologies and AI to develop equitable, community-focused solutions.

Her Royal Highness affirmed that both PSUT and the RSS will remain lasting homes for scientists and partners in the journey of "Science for Peace."

She also underlined the importance of this year's workshop theme, given the profound impact of these technologies in reshaping the world and opening new opportunities for developing nations, highlighting their responsible and just use in service of the public good.

“Through COMSATS, in partnership with ICESCO and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), we have a platform that unites us across borders and disciplines,” she added.“This enables us to harness science and technology not only for economic growth, but to uphold human dignity, strengthen resilience, and promote peace. Science must remain a source of hope and inspiration. We share a collective responsibility to instill in future generations a spirit of curiosity, creativity, and courage. Science is not merely about discovery — it is a legacy to be passed on, a torch lighting the path for those who follow.”

The visit included a meeting of the COMSATS Technical Advisory Committee, a field tour of RSS laboratories, and the main workshop, which explored key topics including transparency and explainability, governance and accountability, ethics and social alignment, and information systems and data management for trustworthy AI.

Experts and visiting delegation members took part in the workshop, including Dr. Adel Samida from ICESCO, and TWAS Executive Director Prof. Marcelo Knobel, who joined virtually.

In her remarks, PSUT President Prof. Abu Elhaija reaffirmed the University’s firm commitment to the vision that “technology is a means, not an end — a tool for human progress and global solidarity.” She explained that the University aligns its academic and research programs with national development priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Prof. Abu Elhaija noted that PSUT has emerged as a national and regional leader in computer science, electrical engineering, business technology, and scientific research. The University fosters innovation through a wide range of initiatives, including startup support funds, Venture Lab, Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship, iPARK, and the “Entrepreneur-in-Residence” (EIR) program, which supports local and international startups. She expressed the University’s readiness to collaborate with COMSATS and all partners on joint research initiatives, capacity-building programs, and technical solutions that highlight the value of international cooperation.

She added that PSUT researchers, in collaboration with RSS, government entities, and international partners, have developed practical, innovative solutions that directly support sustainable development efforts. This aligns with HRH Princess Sumaya’s inspiring vision of establishing institutions that leverage science and technology for peace, prosperity, and progress.

For his part, Ambassador Dr. Zakaria, Executive Director of COMSATS, expressed the delegation’s delight with the visit to PSUT, which he described as a leading model in applying technology for development and education. He conveyed his deep appreciation for the warm hospitality and the rich discussions that took place during meetings and the workshop.

Dr. Zakaria added that COMSATS looks forward to strengthening research and scientific collaboration with PSUT and RSS, especially in applied sciences and advanced technologies.

During the visit, Dr. Sufyan Almajali, PSUT Director of External Relations, presented an overview of the use of artificial intelligence technologies to assess climate change patterns, predict extreme weather events, and issue early warnings. He also outlined several other AI applications for enhancing climate research.

The visit concluded with a set of recommendations and best practices for guiding the deployment of AI in alignment with social values, ethical principles, and regulatory frameworks.
