A team from the King Hussein School of Computing Sciences at Princess Sumaya University for Technology won second place in the Zinc AI Hackathon, organized by the Zain Innovation Campus through the Xpand conference. The competition focused on developing innovative solutions to challenges in health technology, educational technology, financial technology, and communications.
The winning team comprised students Aya Hamoudeh, Issa Bawab, Dana Al Sharif, and Lafi Odeh. Their project was a mobile application designed to help visually impaired individuals identify objects and their surroundings, as well as search for items by voice commands.
Dr. Firas Ghanem, Dean of King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, expressed pride in the students' creativity and ability to develop innovative solutions in biotechnology. He highlighted their contributions to enhancing the independence and comfort of users in daily life. Dr. Ghanem also thanked the university administration for its continued support, emphasizing the importance of nurturing creative youth to become pioneers and positive influencers in their fields.
The hackathon spanned three weeks, involving 55 teams of university students and AI professionals. It featured workshops and intensive training on project development, UX/UI design, and sales and marketing. In the second week, 28 projects were selected for the final stage. By the end of the third week, the projects were narrowed down to 15, with three top teams selected at the conclusion of the hackathon.
